In the cold northlands of the Vikings, a child named Sigurd is born. Even before he has come into the world, his father, the king, dies in battle against Odin, one of the gods of the Vikings. Sigurd then becomes the stepson of the new king. When Sigurd is young, the king sends him to live with one of his stepfather’s barons, Regin. Regin is a dwarf, a race of magical creatures who live underground and always want more gold than they can get.
One day in the stables, Regin says, "Sigurd, you are the son of the first king; you are strong. Take your inheritance by force, and you will be king."
Sigurd says, "But the king is kind to me. He gives me whatever I ask."
Regin laughs at Sigurd. He asks, "If this is true, then where is your horse? You cannot be a knight without a horse."
Sigurd says, "It will be easy to get a horse. I will show you." So he sets out to find one.
While selecting a horse to buy, Sigurd is approached by an old man.
"You are Sigurd, son of the king; you must choose this great white stallion. He will never fail you."
Sigurd listens to the old man and picks the horse named Grani, a magical steed. After Sigurd leaves with Grani, the old man reveals himself to be none other than Odin. He has disguised himself so that he could help Sigurd without the young warrior's knowledge.
When Sigurd returns with a magical horse, Regin is furious. Regin devises a plan to rid himself of Sigurd. He tells Sigurd, "This proves nothing. Anyone can buy a horse. Kill the dragon Fafnir and all will know of your valor. And you will have riches beyond any other king."
In order to slay Fafnir, Sigurd asks Regin to make him a wondrous sword. When Regin hands him the sword, Sigurd tests it by striking the anvil on which it was made. The sword breaks, so Sigurd asks for another. The second sword also breaks. Sigurd then asks Regin to make him a sword from the broken pieces of the first two. When Sigurd tests the third sword, it slices through the anvil cleanly.
With his sword, his magical steed, and his strength and wisdom, Sigurd gathers his courage and enters battle against Fafnir. Odin, disguised as the old man, appears before Sigurd and says, "You cannot face him head on; you will be slain. Dig a hole. If you do this, you will defeat him easily."
Once again, Sigurd listens to the old man. When the hole is dug, Sigurd hides in it and yells out a challenge to Fafnir. The dragon comes charging. The ground trembles under the fearsome beast, but Sigurd does not run. When the dragon is over the hole, Sigurd strikes and slays Fafnir with one blow. After his victory, some of the dragon’s power spills into Sigurd. The hero becomes even stronger and goes on to accomplish even greater deeds so that his legend still lives on many years later.

Dear Editor,

I have never taken the time to write a letter to the editor, but something happened that lit a fire in me. Last week, as my best friend Areliss and I headed to class, a group of college protesters blocked our path. Their signs read "GO HOME" and "ILLEGALS LEAVE." They shouted, "Send them home!" These protesters couldn't have known what Areliss felt as they shouted and waved pamphlets in our faces like tattered flags. But, I know their words were bullets to Areliss's heart. I wanted to fire back to the protestors: Where are your ancestors from?

Areliss came to the United States illegally, but she didn't do it intentionally. She was a baby. Her parents, seeking a better life, failed to follow the established immigration procedure, and they slipped into our country undetected. Once here, they raised Areliss, who would grow up never knowing any other home but America.

Under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), Areliss has been granted the temporary opportunity to remain here while she completes her college education. DACA ensures, at least for a while, that she will not be deported to a country she has never visited in her entire life.

The term "DREAMers" refers to an act that would have protected these immigrant children if they attended college or served in the military. The DREAM Act did not pass, but its name has remained. DACA recipients have a dream: they dream that their lifelong contribution to the United States will one day be recognized, and they will be permitted to stay in the country they have always called home.

Now, DACA is ending. Those who oppose DACA say it encourages illegal activity, weakens our borders, and goes against the Constitution. I understand their concerns. In an era of heightened security, we must do our utmost to keep this great nation safe. That includes establishing a healthy monitoring system for immigration.

But, those who oppose DACA, who wield protest signs and who want to build walls, have never felt the dreaded doom of deportation. They forget that our long and colorful history has been built by many immigrants—including the immigrants who fought for and founded our country. They forget that Lady Liberty stands as a beacon, asking for the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. We have a responsibility to them.

To send DREAMers away is to deny that responsibility. Programs like DACA exist to keep the American dream alive.

Yes, Areliss is a DREAMer. But I, too, have a dream. My dream is that DACA will be reinstated. My dream is that Areliss will be invited to stay in the country she has known as home since she was a baby and live out her dreams in the country she loves.
