Daily life in the north consisted of hard industrial work, overpopulation, violence, filthy streets, and disease that was constantly being spread by contaminated water and vermin.
In the north and the south, agriculture and industry were equally influencing the way of life in the United States, but it was also beginning to shape their separate social attitudes, as well as their social structures. Families among the south actually believed that owning slaves was something that was essential to their liberty. Yet, in the northern states slavery was harshly looked down on, and for good reason. The north was usually “ free soil”, meaning that they supported the idea of wage labor over slavery. Whereas in northern states, the family’s life and more importantly their children’s lives, were not so heavily based upon the careers of the household. As for social structures, the northern social structure was formed around the increasing merchant class, but in the south, the social structure was plainly based on whoever owned the largest plantation at the time.
I would confidently predict that the western section of the United States will first become a battleground between the northerners and the southerners, in a fight for who will influence the new land. Their religious beliefs and suspicions of one another will have to settle before development in the west progresses any further. Only then, do I believe that the west will finally develop into new land for agriculture and the villages will slowly give way to cities, growing into a righteous mix between southern and northern cultures. I predict that the west would be more likely to side with both regions, the north and the south on important issues, as the economy in the west will not only become agricultural but it will also become the birthplace of technological innovations. I presume that this will also be the creation of immense opportunity and things like slavery and lack of sanitation will become ideas that seem completely barbaric.
