Read the following passage carefully before you choose your answer.
This passage is taken from a nineteenth-century speech given in Massachusetts after the conviction of a fugitive slave.1
(1) I walk toward one of our ponds; but what signifies the beauty of nature when men are base? We walk to lakes to see our serenity reflected in them; when we are not serene, we go not to them. Who can be serene in a country where both the rulers and the ruled are without principle? The remembrance of my country spoils my walk. My thoughts are murder to the State, and involuntarily go plotting against her.
(2) But it chanced the other day that I scented a white water-lily, and a season I had waited for had arrived. It is the emblem of purity. It bursts up so pure and fair to the eye, and so sweet to the scent, as if to show us what purity and sweetness reside in, and can be extracted from, the slime and muck of earth. I think I have plucked the first one that has opened for a mile. What confirmation of our hopes is in the fragrance of this flower! I shall not so soon despair of the world for it, notwithstanding slavery, and the cowardice and want of principle of Northern men. It suggests what kind of laws have prevailed longest and widest, and still prevail, and that the time may come when man's deeds will smell as sweet. Such is the odor which the plant emits. If Nature can compound this fragrance still annually, I shall believe her still young and full of vigor, her integrity and genius unimpaired, and that there is virtue even in man, too, who is fitted to perceive and love it. It reminds me that Nature has been partner to no Missouri Compromise. I scent no compromise in the fragrance of the water-lily. It is not a Nymphoea Douglasii.2 In it, the sweet, and pure, and innocent are wholly sundered from the obscene and baleful. I do not scent in this the time-serving irresolution of a Massachusetts Governor, nor of a Boston Mayor. So behave that the odor of your actions may enhance the general sweetness of the atmosphere, that when we behold or scent a flower, we may not be reminded how inconsistent your deeds are with it; for all odor is but one form of advertisement of a moral quality, and if fair actions had not been performed, the lily would not smell sweet. The foul slime stands for the sloth and vice of man, the decay of humanity; the fragrant flower that springs from it, for the purity and courage which are immortal.
(3) Slavery and servility have produced no sweet-scented flower annually, to charm the senses of men, for they have no real life: they are merely a decaying and a death, offensive to all healthy nostrils. We do not complain that they live, but that they do not get buried. Let the living bury them: even they are good for manure.
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed by the United States Congress in 1850. It required that all escaped slaves were returned to their masters even if they were discovered in a free state. Assisting or helping hide fugitive slaves became a federal offense with prison time and fines.
A reference to Senator Stephen A. Douglas, the primary author of the Compromise of 1850, which included the Fugitive Slave Act. A water lily's botanical name is Nymphaea odorata.
The author's attitude toward nature can best be described as: ____________
a. positive, because time spent in nature brings rest and clarity
b. hopeful, because nature mirrors humanity in many ways
c. whimsical, because nature is an effective escape from problems
d. practical, because nature provide humans with important resources
The author's attitude toward nature is positive, finding solace and purity in its beauty and fragrance. Option A.
The author's attitude toward nature is primarily positive, finding solace, purity, and hope in its beauty and fragrance. The passage highlights the author's inclination to seek refuge and tranquility in natural surroundings.
In the first paragraph, the author expresses a sense of disappointment and disillusionment with humanity, stating that the remembrance of their country spoils their walk. However, this negative view of humanity contrasts with the author's perception of nature.
In the second paragraph, the author encounters a white water-lily, which becomes a symbol of purity. The author describes the flower bursting up from the "slime and muck of earth," emphasizing the contrast between its pure appearance and its origins. This experience fills the author with hope and confirmation of their aspirations, despite the presence of slavery and the perceived lack of principles in Northern men.
The author believes that nature's ability to produce such a fragrant flower annually indicates its enduring vitality, integrity, and unimpaired genius. There is a belief in the virtue inherent in nature and in mankind's potential to perceive and love it. The author also draws a contrast between the water-lily and political compromises, suggesting that nature remains untainted by human indecisiveness and time-serving behaviors.
Throughout the passage, the author's descriptions of the water-lily's fragrance, purity, and the contrast it presents to the decay and vices of humanity reveal a positive and hopeful outlook toward nature. Nature is portrayed as a source of inspiration, reminding humans of the potential for purity, courage, and immortality.
In summary, the author's attitude toward nature in this passage is positive, viewing it as a source of solace, purity, and hope that contrasts with the disillusionment and flaws of humanity. So Option A is correct.

How does Denise Levertov use her craft to write the truth of the horror of world? Write a whole paragraph with two piece of evidence and reasoning. Please help due today
Answer:
Denise Levertov, a prominent poet of the 20th century, used her craft to write about the truth of the horror of the world in her poetry. One of the ways she achieves this is through her use of vivid and concrete imagery. For example, in her poem "Life at War," she describes "the screams of children mown down / while playing at hopscotch," which creates a powerful image of the violence and tragedy of war. Through these concrete images, Levertov brings the harsh reality of war to life for the reader. Additionally, Levertov uses her craft to write the truth of the horror of the world by incorporating a sense of urgency in her poems. In "What Were They Like?", Levertov writes about the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and the urgency of the situation is palpable in lines such as "Did the people of Viet Nam / use lanterns of stone?" and "Were they inclined to quiet laughter?" These questions not only convey the devastation of war but also express a sense of urgency to remember and acknowledge the lives that were lost. Overall, Levertov's use of vivid imagery and urgency in her poetry allows her to write about the truth of the horror of the world and its impact on humanity.
Answer:
Denise Levertov, a prominent poet, uses her craft to depict the truth of the horror of the world. She does this by using vivid imagery and metaphors in her poems. In her poem "Life at War," Levertov writes, "The dead, the dead, who clamor for attention / Because we have kept them alive, this way or that, / With our staffs and our badges, our honor rolls." Here, Levertov uses a metaphor to compare the dead to those who are still alive, who are clamoring for attention. This metaphorical comparison brings attention to the horrors of war and the human cost of it. Additionally, in her poem "What Were They Like?", Levertov writes, "Did the people of Viet Nam / use lanterns of stone?" Here, Levertov uses a rhetorical question to emphasize the loss of cultural heritage due to war. By bringing up such questions, Levertov conveys the message that the horrors of war cannot be contained to a single aspect but permeate every aspect of society, including the cultural heritage of a nation. In this way, Levertov uses her craft to truthfully depict the horrors of the world.

what traditional organizational quality would the author say is acceptable during times of stability but can seriously hamper an organization when it faces threats?
The traditional organizational quality that the author would say is acceptable during times of stability but can seriously hamper an organization when it faces threats is a rigid hierarchical structure.
During times of stability, a rigid hierarchical structure in an organization may be deemed acceptable due to its ability to establish clear lines of authority and promote stability.
This traditional approach helps in maintaining order, streamlining decision-making processes, and ensuring efficient operations.
However, when an organization faces threats, such as rapid changes in the business environment or intense competition, a rigid hierarchical structure can become a hindrance.
In times of crisis or uncertainty, organizations need to be agile and responsive, adapting quickly to new circumstances and making swift decisions.
A rigid hierarchical structure often slows down communication and decision-making processes as they are bound by multiple layers of approval and bureaucracy.
This delay can prevent the organization from effectively addressing the threats it faces, leading to missed opportunities or even failure.
On the other hand, a more flexible and adaptive organizational structure, such as a flatter hierarchy or cross-functional teams, allows for faster communication, collaboration, and decision-making. These structures empower employees at all levels to contribute their ideas and take timely actions, enabling the organization to respond swiftly to threats and seize new opportunities.
Therefore, while a rigid hierarchical structure may be suitable during stable times, it can impede an organization's ability to respond effectively to threats, highlighting the importance of adaptability and flexibility in the face of challenges.
