Define verisimilitude. Explain Kate Chopin’s use of realism in The Awakening.

Answers

Verisimilitude refers to the quality of appearing true or realistic in a work of art or literature. It is the ability of a fictional narrative to convincingly depict the details of the real world, creating a sense of authenticity and believability for the reader or audience.

Kate Chopin's novel, The Awakening, is an exemplary work of realism in literature. Set in the late 19th century, the novel explores the protagonist Edna Pontellier's journey of self-discovery and her struggle against societal expectations of womanhood. Chopin's use of realism is evident in her depiction of the social norms, customs, and constraints of the era, accurately capturing the attitudes and behavior prevalent during that time.

Chopin skillfully portrays the conflicts and desires of her characters, presenting them as complex and flawed individuals. The narrative does not shy away from addressing controversial themes such as female sexuality, independence, and the limitations placed on women in society. By grounding her story in a realistic context, Chopin enables readers to relate to and empathize with Edna's experiences, making the novel emotionally resonant.

Through her realistic portrayal of characters and their struggles within a specific historical and cultural context, Chopin achieves verisimilitude in The Awakening, immersing readers in a world that feels authentic and true to life.

Answers

The point from the speech that most validly supports Warren's argument that wage discrimination against women currently exist is that America's women are tired of hearing that pay inequality isn't real."

What is wage discrimination?

It should be noted that wage discrimination simply means paying someone less because of their race to gender. Wage discrimination means paying someone less. Paying an employee less because of a protected characteristic violates the law. For example, paying women less than men for the same work qualifies as wage discrimination.

However, men can also be victims of wage discrimination if they receive lower pay because of their race, age, disability status, or another protected class.

In this case, it was stated that women were paid lesser than men even though they were doing exactly the same work.

Therefore, America's women are tired of hearing that pay inequality isn't real." This was important to support the stance of the author regarding the bias regarding payment.

Read the passage. excerpt from "Why Equal Pay Is Worth Fighting For" by Senator Elizabeth Warren, April 17, 2014

I honestly can't believe that we're still arguing over equal pay in 2014.

When I started teaching elementary school after college, the public school district didn't hide the fact that it had two pay scales: one for men and one for women. Women have made incredible strides since then. But 40 years later, we're still debating equal pay for equal work.

Women today still earn only 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, and they're taking a hit in nearly every occupation. Bloomberg analyzed Census data and found that median earnings for women were lower than those for men in 264 of 265 major occupation categories. In 99.6 percent of occupations, men get paid more than women. That's not an accident; that's discrimination.

The effects of this discrimination are real, and they are long lasting. Today, more young women go to college than men, but unequal pay makes it harder for them to pay back student loans. Pay inequality also means a tougher retirement for women. . . .

For middle-class families today, it usually takes two incomes to get by, and many families depend as much on Mom's salary as they do on Dad's, if not more. Women are the main breadwinners, or joint breadwinners, in two-thirds of the families across the country, and pay discrimination makes it that much harder for these families to stay afloat.

Women are ready to fight back against pay discrimination, but it's not easy. Today, a woman can get fired for asking the guy across the hall how much money he makes. Here in the Senate, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) introduced the Paycheck Fairness Act to give women the tools to combat wage discrimination. It would help ensure that salary differences have something to do with the actual job that they are doing, and not just because they are women.

This is a common-sense proposal—no discrimination, no retaliation when women ask how much the guys are getting paid, and basic data that tell us how much men and women are getting paid for key jobs. Basic protection, basic information—that's essentially all this bill does. Employers can still pay different workers different salaries based on factors like skill, performance, expertise, seniority, and so forth—the Paycheck Fairness Act doesn't touch any of that.

Even while women still earn less than men in 99.6 percent of occupations, Senate Republicans won't even let the Senate vote on a bill to help make the workplace a little fairer for women. They just filibustered the Paycheck Fairness Act for a third time, telling women that we don't need paycheck fairness.

This should be a no-brainer. America's women are tired of hearing that pay inequality isn't real. We're tired of hearing that it is somehow our fault, and we're ready to fight back. We are not going to give up on passing the Paycheck Fairness Act to level the playing field for hardworking women in the workplace.

Senator Warren states that women are "ready to fight back" against unequal pay.

Read the following psychology textbook passage and then answer the question.
(1) Psychologists Judith Rodin and Ellen Langer demonstrated the importance of having a sense of control in a classic series of studies with nursing home residents. (2) One group of residents—the “high-control” group—was given the opportunity to make choices about their daily activities and to exercise control over their environment. For example, the residents were allowed to determine where they would receive visitors and when they would attend a movie screening. (3) In contrast, the “low-control” group had little control over their daily activities. Decisions were made for them by the nursing home staff. Rodin and Langer found that having a sense of control over their environment had powerful effects on the nursing home residents. (4) Eighteen months later, the high-control residents were more active, alert, sociable, and healthy than the low-control residents. Members of the high-control group were also more likely to be alive: twice as many of the low-control residents had died.

Please give honest feedback on my short story. How could I improve it and if there are any grammatical errors please let me know? I was supposed to write a short story based on a song for my creative writing class. I chose dandelions by Ruth B. I wanted it to be about a man who thinks very little of himself and is practically ignored by the world and falls in love with this unique and kind woman.

I couldn’t help but admire the petals, bright yellow, even on the coldest fall days their appearance screamed summer. Even before they bloom, they just have this simplistic beauty; white and pure, they represent all the what-ifs of life. Maybe that’s why she liked them, and I liked her. She wasn’t a bouquet of roses or lilies kind of girl. She enjoyed the simple things: sweaters, rain, those little bugs no one would think twice about, and dandelions. She appreciated the little things that no one cared to look at or preferred not to, the things the world decided had no value. She saw them. She saw me. I remember the day so perfectly vivid; she was so pale and pure and perfect, just like a dandelion. She looked past the dirt and the grime, that awful stench that no amount of soap would fix. It was fused to me… it was me. She looked past it, no, she simply never acknowledged it; she always greeted me with the most affectionate smile, so warm and welcoming and her eyes were the type you could see forever in. She listened and laughed, such a musical laugh, even the world's most talented composers could not mimic such beauty. Her voice was sweet and soft, like the poetic tapping of raindrops on a window. Even now I can hear my name flow from her lips, so perfect and gentle. No one ever said my name, because no one ever asked for my name, except her, of course. Everything one imagines love to be was perfectly embedded in her being. She was my love. Through time, however, her presence faded, but my memory never did. Even now, I can hear my name flow from her lips, so perfect and gentle. I can see her eyes as she laughs, brighter than the sun but I’d never dare look away. Such beauty was simple but unacknowledged. She was the type you’d see once in a lifetime. Her being was poetic. It took everything in me to not break down and beg and plead for her to be mine. I didn’t deserve it and neither did she. Besides, she was gone now. I like to imagine she went off to some fancy university where her wit would be put to good use and where her beauty is admired by someone who deserves it. I can imagine her laying in a field in the back of her campus, reciting poems from her book while wishing on dandelions. Of course, that was only my imagination. I’d always wondered why she never said goodbye. Perhaps she realized I was undeserving. She was such a busybody, I’m not sure why she ever wasted her time on me. Every now and then I regret not breaking down at her feet and begging her to be mine, reciting the speech I’ve perfected a thousand times over in my head. Of course, this was only my imagination. I could never bring myself to pick a flower.

We should add a comma after the words "China", "books", "week" and "time", which totalizes four commas, as further explained below.

Where to add commas?

There are a few tips and rules when it comes to the use of commas in a sentence. We use commas to:

Separate items on a list.Separate independent clauses.Set off appositives and nonrestrictive clauses.Distinguish the introductory phrase.Separate phrases or words that interrupt the flow of speech.

Taking the rules above into consideration, we must add a comma after "China" and "books" in order to separate items on a list. We must also add a comma after "week" and "time" to separate phrases that interrupt the flow of speech or that are nonrestrictive.

Thus, the passage with the added commas would look like:
