summary of the story "how fear came" by rudyard kipling

Answers

Answer 1

"How Fear Came" is a short story by Rudyard Kipling that explores the origin of fear in animals. In the story, the First Men live peacefully with the animals, who can speak and understand each other. However, a greedy and power-hungry First Man named Tegumai Bopsulai wants to become the ruler of all animals.

Tegumai devises a plan to accomplish his goal by creating a frightening creature called the "How Fear Came." He takes a firestick and pushes it into the ground, causing it to ignite and scare the animals. They scatter in fear, and Tegumai proclaims himself as their ruler.

However, the animals, led by Pau Amma the crab, come together and decide to confront Tegumai. Pau Amma challenges Tegumai to create another creature, this time using water, to counteract the fear caused by fire. Tegumai accepts the challenge and creates a terrifying creature called the "How Fear Came Again."

When Tegumai unleashes the water creature, it terrifies him and the other First Men, and they flee in fear. The animals then chase them, making it clear that fear affects everyone. In the end, the animals decide to return to their natural order, without any single creature ruling over them.

The story highlights the concept of fear and its universal nature. It suggests that fear is not exclusive to any particular species and affects all living beings.

A pie chart is a circular chart that shows how data sets relate to one another.

Each section's arc length is proportional to the quantity it represents, usually resulting in a shape similar to a slice of pie.

A pie chart is an excellent chart to choose from when displaying data that has stark contrasts.

What are pie graphs best used for?

Pie charts are best to use when you are trying to compare parts of a whole. They do not show changes over time.

Pie charts are hard to draw by hand, have no natural way to order them, and can be hard to compare the sizes of the different categories.

It is harder for us to visually compare angles than lengths, so it is hard for people to visually read a pie chart.

A satellite is a small object that orbits around a larger object in space. Satellites can be natural or artificial (made by people). All the planets in the solar system except Mercury and Venus have natural satellites. Earth’s moon is one example. Artificial satellites are sent into space to gather information. Most are launched into space by rockets. The first successful U.S. satellite was Explorer 1. It was launched in 1958. Now dozens of new satellites are put into space every year. Artificial satellites have many purposes. Scientific satellites collect information about space. Communications satellites help send telephone calls, radio and television programs, and computer information all over the world. A space station is a special kind of satellite used by astronauts. Astronauts live on a space station for months so as they can gather information and do experiments.

Read the following passage from The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens:
"On either side, the banks of the Medway, covered with corn-fields and pastures, with here and there a windmill, or a distant church, stretched away as far as the eye could see, presenting a rich and varied landscape, rendered more beautiful by the changing shadows which passed swiftly across it as the thin and half-formed clouds skimmed away in the light of the morning sun. The river, reflecting the clear blue of the sky, glistened and sparkled as it flowed noiselessly on; and the oars of the fishermen dipped into the water with a clear and liquid sound."
Which of the following phrases from the passage most contribute to the peaceful mood?

A.
Fishermen dipped into the water

B.
Glistened and sparkled

C.
As the eye

D.
Changing shadows

Answers

Option B. "Glistened and sparkled" from the passage most contribute to the peaceful mood. By reflecting the clear blue of the sky, the river contributes to the peaceful mood as well.

The question asks us to identify the phrase from the passage that most contributes to the peaceful mood.

Let's analyze each option to determine which one best fits the description.

Option A, "Fishermen dipped into the water," describes an action but doesn't necessarily evoke a peaceful mood.

Option C, "As the eye," is a partial phrase and doesn't provide sufficient context to evaluate its contribution to the mood.

Option D, "Changing shadows," implies movement and may evoke a sense of change rather than peace.

Option B, "Glistened and sparkled," is the most suitable choice as it suggests a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The use of words like "glistened" and "sparkled" conveys a sense of beauty and calmness.

However, the phrase "Glistened and sparkled" captures the essence of tranquility more directly.

Therefore, the correct answer is B. "Glistened and sparkled," as it most significantly contributes to the peaceful mood described in the passage.

Read the excerpt from a short story. From the porch, the cabin looked as quaint and rustic as the website had promised. I hoisted my duffel to my hip, unlocked the door with the key I’d been sent, and stepped into the warm air of the mountain home. The floorboards creaked a welcome as I investigated. I admired the piney living room, noting the stone hearth and the dappled afternoon light on the walls. Then I made my way toward the sole bedroom at the end of the hall. I glanced at the eyelet bedcover, the mantle clock, and the antique mirror. Wait. I glanced again at the mirror and impulsively brushed my hair from my eyes, balking at the coloring of the wayward wisps. How could it be? My hand touched my skin—the image I faced was a much older version of myself. I backed away, watching my wrinkled face retreat. I tripped on the doorjamb, stubbed my toe on an errant nail, and nearly toppled over my own luggage as I lunged for the door.
