essay on what service above slef mean to you
----->HERE YOUR ANSWER <------
SERVICE above self means a lot to different people. Some people maybe in the Police, Fire Service, doctors, soldiers and many more have different ideas about what service above self means to them. But I am going to talk about what it means to me.
I believe that service above self means helping somebody else before you help yourself. This could be something as small as offering somebody else the first selection out of a box of chocolates before yourself, risking the one you prefer or something as big as givving your life for your country.
Whether it be big or small, these people are heroes in their own right, thinking of something or somebody else before themselves.
I personally do this every day, for example picking my brother up from school or doing work for my young enterprise company when I could be having fun. Everybody does service before self in their everyday lives, which would mean an idealistic world although everybody commits the opposite, self service. I will admit, I am not perfect and I do do selfish things, and so do most people. Service before self would lead to and idealistic world with no violence or bullying or anything bad in the world. A lot of the time self service means thinking two steps ahead of what you are doing. Say if we start a war, millions maybe killed, even though we may get what we want, we should use a diplomatic solution, as not to cause mass destruction or a war.
In my opinion service above self is one of the most important things a person can do. In the group cubs (before Scouts) part of the promise one must take is "think of others before myself" and also in the law is "help other people". In many other rule books or promises made by army men or 999 services is something that says to help other people in some way. The idea of scouting is to do a good deed every day. Serve before self is the way to achieving this goal. I believe that service before self means that you think one step ahead and think before you do something and consider how my actions could affect another persons opinion and feelings.
A good example of a selfish person is the person who drew the cartoon that insulted the religion Islam. That person was very selfish, and did not think before he drew the cartoon. If he/she had been thinking service before self, they would have thought this would insult and upset people of this religion, I should not print it. People who are in the Iraq war are also a help in service before self. They have given their lives to defend the world from terrorism and nuclear war. They have made the ultimate sacrifice and have taken service above self to the maximum. These are the true heroes of the world

Buried Underpants and Tea Bags Help Scientists Evaluate Soil
Swiss citizens are burying cotton underpants and tea bags in their gardens and fields to help
scientists assess the quality of soil in the Alpine nation.
1. Bury underpants and tea bags in your garden? Why not, thought scientist Marcel van der
Heijden of the University of Zurich. It may sound odd, but Swiss citizens are burying cotton
underwear and tea bags in their gardens, yards and fields to help researchers evaluate the quality
of soil in the Alpine nation. A joint venture of the University of Zurich and the Swiss federal
research institute Agroscope, “Proof By Underpants” is enlisting private gardeners, farmers and
other interested citizens, who bury cotton underpants throughout Switzerland, dig them up after
two months and photograph what is left. “The more degraded the underpants, the more active the
soil life and the healthier the soil,” according an online description of the project. “This
experiment will show whether the decomposition of cotton fabric by soil organisms is a suitable
indicator for soil life activity.”
2. Launched last year, the experiment comes against the backdrop of deteriorating soil quality in
many parts of the world due to erosion, construction, pesticides and drought. In mountainous
Switzerland, erosion is a particularly acute problem. “There are many issues linked to soil which
are very important for society,” van der Heijden said in an interview in his small office,
surrounded by folders, sheets and plants. “For instance, in Switzerland it is very hilly and
consequently there is a lot of erosion. It is important to have good soil structure to grow crops
and filter the water. Ninety-nine percent of our food production depends on soil.”
3. By enlisting citizens, researchers can cover the whole of Switzerland. The citizen science
project offers the advantage of informing participants of the state of their soil while providing the
scientists with data capturing variations across the country. Van der Heijden said the cheeky
approach of using underpants — What could be more common in households? — attracts
participants who might otherwise find the subject matter, well, just black and dirty, whereas soil
is CRITICAL for our survival.
4. Using high-tech equipment, scientists can examine soil to see if it is rich in nutrients and
bacteria. But it is time-consuming and expensive for them to collect samples across an entire
country. By enlisting citizens, the researchers extend their reach. “Everyone has a different way
of digging in their underpants, which leads to variation of the data, but without this huge
collaboration, the largest of its kind in Switzerland so far, we would never have been able to
measure the ground of the whole of Switzerland in a useful time,” van der Heijden said.
5. Cotton in underpants is biodegradable and made up of cellulose, which is devoured by
bacteria, fungi, insects, worms and other creatures in the soil. The more micro-organisms, the
quicker the slip disappears. Once the recommended type of tea — Lipton green tea or Rooibos, a
South African herbal tea — is buried 8 centimeters in the ground, it starts to decompose. The
more active the soil, the more the tea in the unused plastic tea bags DECAYS. Scientists are
using data from the Swiss experiment and elsewhere in the world to compile a Teabag Index and
draw a global soil map that can be used to improve global climate models.

Which of the following should be capitalized ? A. The words city, state, and province when used preceding a name. B. Brand names. C. General names for buildings. D. The names of the seasons.
Answer: B. Brand names
Explanation: Brand names are proper nouns. For example imagine a counter with Allegra, Advil, and Tums; and then someone tells you to "go take that medicine on the counter". You would most likely be confused as to which one they're referring to. However, if someone was to instead say "go take that Advil on the counter", you would most likely be less confused as to which one they're referring to.
See how by saying "Advil" instead of "medicine" it makes the sentence and what the person's referring to clearer and more specific. That's what proper nouns do.
Brand names being proper nouns is what stops people from taking Tums when they really needed an Advil.

So far, you have learned how to sign quite a few words in ASL and some of those signs are actually what we call “cognates” to words in English; they are words whose signs are easily understandable because their signs are almost as if you were playing the game charades and acting out the word. In ASL linguistics, we call these “iconic” signs because there is a visual reason behind the formation of the sign (IE I, YOUR, HELLO). There are also “arbitrary” signs in which there is no obvious reason behind the formation of the sign (IE MOTHER, LIKE, COLOR). Choose 20 of the signs you have learned so far and sort them into three categories: iconic, arbitrary, unsure. Explain why you chose the category for the sign.
