Answers

Answer 1

Under Amendment 1 of the United States Constitution, the freedom that grants individuals the right is freedom of expression

To watch what they want on TV, have a crazy hairstyle, or wear clothing that may not be appropriate in some circles is the freedom of expression. The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech, which encompasses various forms of expression, including verbal, written, symbolic, and expressive conduct.

This freedom allows individuals to express themselves through their choices in media consumption, personal appearance, and style, as long as it does not infringe upon the rights or safety of others or incite violence. The First Amendment plays a crucial role in safeguarding individual liberties and fostering a diverse and pluralistic society.

Buck's devotion for John caused him to transform from a domestic dog into a wild animal. His feelings caused things to alter when he was given to a new owner.

What does this suggest about Buck's transformation?

Out of respect for the club and fang, Buck learns to steal "covertly and cunningly." According to the Bible, Buck stole not out of delight but rather to satisfy his hunger. He has also come to understand that theft is a necessary component of wild existence.

And after his encounter, he decides to remain a sled dog and presumably won't interact with humans. Since Spitz is no longer in charge, Buck takes over.

The fight for independence in Cuba was closely observed by the US. There were numerous American residents living in Cuba, and the United States had invested millions of dollars in businesses there. The US and Cuba also engaged in trade. Therefore it was a combination of all.

Why did the US become interested in Cuba?

Long before 1898, the United States started to be interested in buying Cuba. After the Ten Years' War, American sugar companies acquired substantial amounts of land in Cuba. After the slaves were emancipated, American businessmen began investing millions of dollars in substantial sugar cane estates in Cuba. One of the focuses of the Cuban rebels' uprising against Spanish rule was their crops. The United States and Cuba had established strong economic ties by the early 1890s. The majority of Cuba's sugar exports to the United States were made possible by American investments totaling about $50 million in the island nation's sugar mines, railroads, and plantations.

The methods of the HUAC and the treatment of the Hollywood 10 reflected the Cold War beliefs of people being afraid that communists were trying to undermine American culture.

During the Cold War, there was widespread fear and paranoia about the spread of communism and its potential to subvert American democracy and culture. The HUAC was created in the 1930s to investigate alleged communist influence in American society, and it became particularly active during the early years of the Cold War. The Hollywood 10 were a group of filmmakers who were targeted by the HUAC for their alleged ties to communism, and their treatment reflected the broader anxieties of the era about the supposed communist threat to American culture and values. The HUAC's tactics of subpoenaing and questioning people about their political beliefs and affiliations, and punishing them for refusing to cooperate, were seen as necessary measures to protect American society from the perceived communist threat.

"The Greeks have decided in their own agreement that the symbol must be a kind of pictogram" (11). The Greeks had to add their own definition to the hieroglyphs. In addition, a Greek writer named Horapollo thought that the image of a goose represented son. Then he thought that the carved image of the rabbit meant that it was open, because the rabbit's eyes were never closed. Many copies of the stone were made, and all French soldiers first decided to translate the hieroglyphs. One of the soldiers, Sylvestre de Sassy, had some ideas. What is the hilly flanks theory?

The Hilly Sides hypothesis, offered by Robert Braidwood in 1948, proposes that agriculture began on the hilly flanks of the Taurus and Zagros mountains, where the climate was not drier, as Childe believed, and fertile terrain supported a diversity of flora and animals susceptible to domestication.

Archeologist Bryan Hayden developed the "feasting model idea" for the origins of agriculture. It claims that extravagant shows of authority necessitated intensive agriculture. Large quantities of food had to be prepared in order to routinely hold feasts as a means of asserting control.

Read the article, "This Map Shows the Scale of the 16th- and 17th-Century Scottish Witch Trials" located in the module resources. When reviewing this article, you may consult the map or the text. As you examine the article, find stories, details, and words that stand out as topics of diversity.

How does your peers' understanding of the article inform your understanding of seeing the same historical moment from more than one perspective?

While reading this article, the diversity-related word that stood out to me was ‘woman.’ When looking at an account of a historical event, it is important to consider what perspective of the event we are hearing. Historically, women’s voices have been marginalized and I’m sure that if a woman’s perspective of these events was recorded, we would have had a much different history. Diversity is what makes people unique and instead of celebrating these unique women, they were called witches and murdered. Sadly, these women were not witches, they were mothers, sisters, friends, and wives. Because these women did not fit the societal standard of what a woman should be at the time, they were persecuted and tortured to death. In the case of Isobel Young, whose husband claimed "that his wife had attempted "to kill him with magic after quarreling about an unsavory house guest." it sounds like she just didn’t take her husband’s things lying down.

What this story, and many other stories in history, tell us about the relationship between culture, identity, power, and history is that whoever has the power and falls within the confines of the acceptable identity within a society will write history. Those in power are in control of the historical narrative and are the voices that we have heard for generations. If more diverse perspectives were recorded during this event, then countless lives could have been saved in other "witch trials" elsewhere. Exploring all voices and perspectives, especially marginalized ones, is the only way that we can gain the whole picture of a past event and the only way to preserve the truth for the future.

-Avery

After spending some time with the article, the term that stood out to me the most was the author Steve Katz's observation that the European witch hunts represented a "fear" of women by dominantly white, male Christian society. They rationalized this fear with how women might coerce or control men, and in that context was perceived as "sorcery." I felt this stood out as a topic of diversity because it represents a core inequality between men and women in society, where men used their power and influence to unfairly persecute and execute those who challenged their position of authority. Reading some of the anecdotes, it sounds like the only "crime" that occurred was that a woman demonstrated "patterns of verbal and physical aggression," as noted with the example of Isabel Young. The fact that her husband was a primary accuser helps to reinforce the notion that gender inequality and social norms played factors in the witch hunts of Scotland.

This resource also told us much about Christian European culture in the 17th century and how seriously people took accusations of witchcraft as an affront to their religious values or people's identity as a "servant of god" or some equivalent. We can still observe these disparities in gender identity today, where marginalized groups continue to be stereotyped. Any attempt to think or act differently might not simply be rejected but considered a threat to their society.

In the context of history, this map shows an evident and systematic pattern of persecution for women throughout Scotland. It highlights a crucial facet of history that the other resources from this week tried to impart. We can teach history in several ways, but its context is essential. Before reading this article, it made me think about the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts. However, I didn't consider much about those events' underlying cultural, identity, and power factors. Now that I have learned more about these trials in other parts of the world, I can't help but wonder more about how diversity played a role in these historical events.

-Charles

Answers

From reading this article and both of my peers' responses, it is clear to see that the 16th and 17th century witch trials in Scotland were rooted in fear and systemic oppression of women and other marginalized groups.

Through the anecdotes presented, we can see the way in which women were framed as the ‘witch’ or the one in control due to their verbal and physical aggression. This paints a picture of how, at the time, certain gender roles were expected to be respected and any deviation from that was viewed as a threat to religious values and social norms.

Both my peers highlight the importance of understanding the way power played a role in these events and how crucial it is to look at a historical moment from all perspectives to gain a whole picture of the truth. This was insightful in getting me to think about the Salem Witch Trials and it further emphasizes the importance of recognizing all voices in history, especially marginalized ones.
