Answers

Answer 1

The detail from the text that best supports the answer to Part A in Act 1 Scene 2 of Julius Caesar is "Brutus had rather be a villager/ Than to repute himself a son of Rome/ Under these hard conditions as this time/ Is like to lay upon us." (Lines 179-182).(C)

This quote shows Brutus' dissatisfaction with the current state of Rome and his concerns about the potential consequences of Caesar's growing power. He would prefer to live a simple life as a villager rather than be part of a Rome that is subjected to a tyrannical ruler.

This highlights Brutus' internal conflict, as he is torn between his love for Rome and his loyalty to Caesar. This detail is significant because it sets the stage for Brutus' eventual decision to join the conspiracy against Caesar, revealing the complex emotions and motivations behind his actions.

The other quotes (A, B, and D) do not provide as much insight into Brutus' feelings and struggles, making option C the best choice.

Answers

The comparison, which Churchill makes about the bookkeeper's balance sheet in the last sentence of the passage, is that the capabilities of the British people to wage the war against the German Nazis are equally balanced by the inevitable dangers she faces and the resilience of the people.

Prime Minister Churchill declared war against Germany during the second world war, which lasted from 1938 to 1945.

In financial accounting, the financial position of an entity at a given time is captured by the balance sheet.  It lists the assets (resources or capabilities) that the entity has and the sources (including equity and liabilities) which finance the assets. The similarities of the passage to a bookkeeper's balance sheet are:

the British war capabilities are like her assetsthe dangers are like her liabilities, and the resilience of the people is like the equity.

Similarly, Churchill listed the capabilities of the British Forces to include

Improved defense methodTrained British pilotsCapable aircraft.

He balanced these capabilities partly with her equity:

the eternal vigilance and resilience of the peoplethe intense exertion of efforts in the war.

He did not overlook the liabilities, which included:

the dangers posed by the German Air forceinvasion devices that the enemy could conceive and  the inability of France to provide some protection.

Thus, he actually balanced the assets (what Britain owns) with the liabilities and equity (what Britain owes), thereby presenting a balanced perspective of the British position during the second world war, like a balance sheet of a business entity. By so doing, he was able to persuade the British people to not only fight on courageously, but to win the war over Nazi Germany.

What do the readings of voices of an emerging nation reveal about diversity within the new nation use at least three specific examples from the text your answer should be at least once complete paragraph

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

"Voices of an Emerging Nation" addresses how the population of the American colonies organized and structured the country we know today. This was not an easy task, much less a calm one to be structured, because in addition to the vast territory and the large number of individuals on American soil, these individuals were different from each other and had cultures, religions, customs and wills different from each other. Although all this difference made the country a highly diverse and culturally rich place, this diversity became dangerous at times, as each former colonia, within its own culture, had its own opinions on how the country should be managed. This diversity could cause separation of colonies and disorganization, for this reason, it was necessary to listen to everyone's opinion and look for a comprehensive way to meet them, without seeming that any culture was being left behind and thus creating a unified country, even that diversified.

O generalization: meaning broadens to refer to something general
amelloration: change in meaning to something more favorable

Answers

Answer:

The word "lord" seems to have undergone:

D. amelioration: change in meaning to something more favorable.

Explanation:

We can say amelioration is the opposite of pejoration. Amelioration is the change for a better meaning, as if the word acquired an improved status. One example of amelioration is the word "nice", which originally meant "silly". The same goes for the word "lord", which is the one we are analyzing here. Originally, "lord" referred to a loaf keeper, a person who provided food for the others in the tribe. The word eventually began to refer to anyone who was superior in birth and nobility, or someone who had power - money, lands, influence.

Answer:

Monique should indicate there is a missing text in her quote in the following manner:

2. She should use an ellipsis in place of the missing text.

Explanation:

It is common for a passage to have more information than what we wish to quote. In case you decide to omit any part of the original text in the quote, the right way to do it is by adding ellipsis in the place of the omitted words or sentences. There is no need to add brackets or to quote the missing part somewhere else in the article.

In Monique's case, since she wants to leave out sentences 4 through 6, this is what it would look like:

Read the passage from "By the Waters of Babylon.”

I went north—I did not try to hide myself. When a god or a demon saw me, then I would die, but meanwhile I was no longer afraid. My hunger for knowledge burned in me—there was so much that I could not understand. After a while, I knew that my belly was hungry. I could have hunted for my meat, but I did not hunt. It is known that the gods did not hunt as we do—they got their food from enchanted boxes and jars. Sometimes these are still found in the Dead Places—once, when I was a child and foolish, I opened such a jar and tasted it and found the food sweet. But my father found out and punished me for it strictly, for, often, that food is death. Now, though, I had long gone past what was forbidden, and I entered the likeliest towers, looking for the food of the gods.

Which sentence from the passage supports the theme that breaking the rules may be necessary for growth?

“When a god or a demon saw me, then I would die, but meanwhile I was no longer afraid.”
“My hunger for knowledge burned in me—there was so much that I could not understand.”
“But my father found out and punished me for it strictly, for, often, that food is death.”
“I had long gone past what was forbidden, and I entered the likeliest towers, looking for the food of the gods.”

Answers

The sentence that shows that breaking the rules might be necessary for growth is;

“I had long gone past what was forbidden, and I entered the likeliest towers, looking for the food of the gods.”

In this passage, the writer recalls how he was punished by his father when he ate from the forbidden things in the temple.

Now, that he had grown past being punished by his father for breaking the rules, he was able to assess the "likeliest" towers and even search for the gods' food.

This shows that sometimes it might be necessary to break the status quo if we will achieve great things. A good example of this is found in the movement termed, Civil Disobedience.

This is a process whereby people break laws in a manner that is free from violence to register their complaints about something that is wrong with a government.

Their disobedience is for the greater good, and without it, they might not achieve breakthroughs.

Do the conclusions from i) apply to these other pairs, or not? If they do, provide a general statement that covers all the pairs you have examined.

Answers

In order to make a general statement that covers all the pairs, we would need to analyze their distribution and occurrence in the language.

How to examine the status of voiced and voiceless consonants?

Based on the provided data from Passamaquoddy, we can analyze the voiced and voiceless consonants to determine if they belong to separate phonemes or if they are allophones of a single phoneme.

i) For the [p] and [b] sounds, we need to determine if they are separate phonemes or allophones. We can examine their distribution and see if they occur in the same environments.

Based on the given data, we can observe that [p] occurs in words like "pak" (fib), "padazikhal" (he makes him choke on smoke), and "ptəgwap" (bag). On the other hand, [b] occurs in words like "keguw" (all day), "wabɛjidʒik" (white men), and "hustiwin" (host).

Since [p] and [b] occur in distinct environments and are not found in minimal pairs (words that differ only by one sound, like "pat" vs. "bat"), we can conclude that [p] and [b] are separate phonemes in Passamaquoddy.

ii) Regarding the other pairs: [t] and [d], [k] and [g], [kw] and [gw], [tʃ] and [dʒ], and [s] and [z], we cannot assume that the conclusions from i) automatically apply to these pairs. Each pair needs to be examined separately based on the data provided.

In order to make a general statement that covers all the pairs, we would need to analyze their distribution and occurrence in the language. Without specific data for each pair, we cannot make a conclusive statement about their phonemic status in Passamaquoddy.

Read the excerpt from the story Animals in the Zoo.

"That was really awesome, Mom," Ryan said when the tour was over. "It was so cool to see all the animals, and the biking made it easier to get from one exhibit to the next. I can't believe we saw the entire zoo that quickly."

It was time for Ryan's mom to examine the tamarins, so they headed to the Primate Discovery Center. They walked into the veterinarian's room so that his mother could examine the tamarins. The public wasn't allowed to see them until Ryan's mother had looked them over and made sure they were healthy. The room was white, very sterile, and looked like an operating room that you would see on TV. Ryan's eyes widened and a look of uneasiness crossed his face. He was scared, and his mother noticed right away.

"Don't worry, we won't be operating on the tamarins today. We are just checking their health and looking at their eyes, ears, and hands during this visit. We want to make sure they are healthy enough to be put into their enclosure," she said. Just then, a zoo employee brought in the two tamarins, and Ryan immediately understood why they were called cotton-top tamarins. They had white tufts of hair on top of their heads. The zoo employee told Ryan and his mom that these two tamarins were the first of many to come to the zoo. If these two stayed healthy and appeared to be happy in their enclosure, the zoo would be able to get even more tamarins to fill the exhibit which is why they wanted to make sure they had an expert come in to examine them.

It took Ryan's mother 30 minutes to check each tamarin. He held his breath the whole time, worried that she might find something wrong. She wanted to make sure they both had thorough examinations. Finally, after an hour, she gave them both the all clear, and Ryan finally exhaled.

One of the tamarins was looking right at Ryan and had her arms stretched out. Ryan looked at his mom with his eyebrows raised as if asking a question. She nodded at him, so he reached out and picked her up from the examination table. The tamarin licked the end of his nose, and Ryan laughed. He definitely would be back to visit the tamarins as soon as he could.

Read the excerpt from the story Winter Driving.

As he came around a bend in the road, he could feel his tires slip and slide on the ice. But the ice wasn't his only problem. His eyes grew wide when he saw a small hill straight ahead. He scrunched his eyebrows as he concentrated on staying on the road. He worried for a minute since he was driving slowly and the ice on the road might prevent him from making it up the hill.

He drove slowly until he got to the base of the hill. He started making his way up, but it wasn't long before his tires started to spin on the ice. He continued, slow and steady, squeezing the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were turning white.

Eventually, Jesper made it to the top of the hill. Phew, he thought. He pulled over so that he could release the steering wheel from his tight grasp. He squeezed his hands into fists a few times to get the blood flowing through his fingers once again. He took a few breaths and continued driving. The snow was still falling, and he knew he definitely didn't want to get stuck sleeping in his car. He had come this far, and he was determined to make it all the way home.

When he reached his driveway, a huge smile spread across his face, and his shoulders finally relaxed. He hadn't realized that his body had been so tense during the entire drive. He put the car in park and turned off the engine with a huge sigh. He was glad to be able to visit with old friends, but the drive home was not enjoyable at all. Next time, he would be sure to check the forecast ahead of time and leave before the weather got bad.
