Read Modern Prosthetic Limbs. Due to accidents or various medical conditions, many people rely on prosthetic limbs to replace arms, hands, legs and feet. Prosthetics are artificial body parts. They replace a body part that is missing or of limited use. For the most part, prosthetics have remained similar for decades. They are made to look like the body parts they replace. This means they are often made to look natural. However, sometimes they are clumsy, or limited in use. They also tend to be expensive, especially for children because they require new prosthetics as they continue to grow. One issue with prosthetics is that some children struggle to accept their prosthetic. Sometimes, they feel embarrassed by its fashion. Some kids even choose not to wear them, even though they can improve their abilities. Joel Gibbard and Samantha Payne wanted to reduce the difficulties with the cost, the functionality, and the look of prosthetic limbs. They began a company called Open Bionics. They started by speaking with several amputees. They asked them what they wanted their prosthetics to look like. They also asked them what they would like their prosthetics to be able to do. Instead of just trying to mimic what regular limbs could do, Open Bionics wanted to create unique prosthetic devices. Many children wanted limbs similar to their favorite superheroes, so Open Bionics partnered with Disney. They began creating prosthetics inspired by children's favorite Disney characters. They were boldly colored, they lit up, and they had special compartments. They also had unique tools and gadgets. Instead of feeling ashamed or embarrassed by their prosthetic limbs, children became excited to wear them. It allowed them to show off a part of what made them unique! In addition to the outward appearance, Open Bionics improved the functionality and cost of prosthetics.
