Passage 1: Excerpt of John Muir's "Calypso Borealis"

[1] After earning a few dollars working on my brother-in law's farm near Portage [Wisconsin], I set off on the first of my long lonely excursions, botanising in glorious freedom around the Great Lakes and wandering through innumerable tamarac and arbor-vitae swamps, and forests of maple, basswood, ash, elm, balsam, fir, pine, spruce, hemlock, rejoicing in their bound wealth and strength and beauty, climbing the trees, revelling in their flowers and fruit like bees in beds of goldenrods, glorying in the fresh cool beauty and charm of the bog and meadow heathworts, grasses, carices, ferns, mosses, liverworts displayed in boundless profusion.

[2] The rarest and most beautiful of the flowering plants I discovered on this first grand excursion was Calypso borealis (the Hider of the North). I had been fording streams more and more difficult to cross and wading bogs and swamps that seemed more and more extensive and more difficult to force one's way through. Entering one of these great tamarac and arbor-vitae swamps one morning, holding a general though very crooked course by compass, struggling through tangled drooping branches and over and under broad heaps of fallen trees, I began to fear that I would not be able to reach dry ground before dark, and therefore would have to pass the night in the swamp and began, faint and hungry, to plan a nest of branches on one of the largest trees or windfalls like a monkey's nest, or eagle's, or Indian's in the flooded forests of the Orinoco described by Humboldt.

[3] But when the sun was getting low and everything seemed most bewildering and discouraging, I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower sprung. The flower was white and made the impression of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower. No other bloom was near it, for the bog a short distance below the surface was still frozen, and the water was ice cold. It seemed the most spiritual of all the flower people I had ever met. I sat down beside it and fairly cried for joy...

[6] Oftentimes I had to sleep without blankets, and sometimes without supper, but usually I had no great difficulty in finding a loaf of bread here and there at the houses of the farmer settlers in the widely scattered clearings. With one of these large backwoods loaves I was able to wander many a long wild fertile mile in the forests and bogs, free as the winds, gathering plants, and glorying in God's abounding inexhaustible spiritual beauty bread. Storms, thunderclouds, winds in the woods—were welcomed as friends.

Passage 2: William Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"

[1]I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
[5]Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
[10]Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
[15]A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
[20]In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Both passages use the word "lonely" in their first sentence. In a paragraph of 4-6 sentences, explain how the discovery of a plant affects the authors' loneliness? What does each experience reveal about the power of nature? Use evidence from both texts to support your answer.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Although both passages begin with the word "lonely," the discovery of a plant has opposite effects on the authors' loneliness. In John Muir's "Calypso Borealis," the discovery of the rare and beautiful plant fills him with joy, to the point of tears, and helps him forget his hunger and fatigue. Muir's experience reveals the power of nature to uplift and nourish the human spirit, even in the midst of physical hardship and solitude. In contrast, William Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" describes a moment when the author feels alone and disconnected from the world, until he comes across a crowd of golden daffodils. The sight of the flowers fills him with happiness, but it is only later, when he is alone on his couch, that their beauty fully reveals itself to him and lifts him out of his loneliness. Wordsworth's experience reveals the power of nature to provide solace and inspiration even after the fact, through the memory of a beautiful experience. Both authors use detailed and sensory language to convey the beauty and power of nature, and to suggest its capacity to move and transform the human spirit.

When dispute requires a quick resolution and your position objectively has a much stronger logical foundation, the conflict handling style that is preferred is Forcing style.

Forcing is a type of conflict handling style which is preferred when there is an urgent need to solve a problem, but it is particularly helpful when the individual's position is objective, has much stronger logical support, or is critical to the group's welfare.

A forcing style, also known as power-oriented or dominating style, is when one party asserts their authority over the other, prioritizing their own demands above the demands of the other party. This style is typically utilized when a quick resolution is needed or when the conflicting parties hold opposite views that cannot be reconciled.

Conflict can arise in any situation, whether it's personal, professional, or between two groups. The forcing style is utilized when one party asserts their authority over the other, prioritizing their own demands above the demands of the other party. This style is typically utilized when a quick resolution is needed or when the conflicting parties hold opposite views that cannot be reconciled. The forcing style is beneficial when the individual's position is objective, has much stronger logical support, or is critical to the group's welfare. This style is not appropriate when the other party is more powerful or the issue is minor.

The yielding style is utilized when one party relinquishes control to the other party in the dispute. This style is typically utilized when the party has a minor issue or when the other party is more powerful. This style is beneficial when the party prefers to concede rather than face the consequences of confrontation. This style is not appropriate when the other party is taking advantage of the situation.

The avoiding style is utilized when one party refrains from engaging in the dispute altogether. This style is typically utilized when the issue is minor, when the other party is more powerful, or when the consequences of confrontation are significant. This style is beneficial when the party believes that confrontation will not help or that confrontation is not worth it. This style is not appropriate when the other party is expecting a response.

The compromising style is utilized when both parties agree to give up something to reach a resolution. This style is typically utilized when the issue is important to both parties and neither party can have everything they want. Latex was a naturally occurring polymer derived from rubber trees. It is collected in pots that are nailed to the sides of some trees. It is used to make tough, waterproof items such as Wellington boots.

The tide is a periodical rise and fall of the sea due to the attraction of the moon and the sun. Day in and day out, the rise and fall continue to be predictable yet at the same time mysterious. At one time in the day, the sea is a long, long way out, leaving a huge expanse of sand.

It is collecting -- it is collected c) trees -- trees d) to -- used to e) G. Yet on (yet at) was (is - goes f)

In the first sentence, "latex" is the correct word, but "produced" should be used instead of "produced from" to indicate that latex is a naturally occurring substance and not made through a manufacturing process.

In the second sentence, "It is collecting" is incorrect, as it should be in past participle form, "It is collected," to indicate that the process of collecting latex is complete.

In the third sentence, "tress" is spelled incorrectly and should be "trees" to indicate that latex is collected from multiple rubber trees. In the fourth sentence, "to" should be "used to" to indicate that latex is used for a specific purpose, namely, to make waterproof items like Wellington boots.

In the fifth sentence, "G. Was is" is incorrect and should be "goes" to indicate that the rise and fall of the tide is a continuous process. In the last sentence, "yet on" is incorrect and should be "yet at" to indicate that the tide's predictability and mysteriousness coexist at the same time.

For me either one of these could be major red flags.
